MAC Week 3 Reading Chapters 5-8

The conductor that was discussed in the reading experienced a transformation that I feel is necessary to become a world-renowned maestro. Instead of focusing on bettering himself, he focused on ways to make the orchestra better. By teaching them to play different musical phrases as best as they could, he focused on the ENTIRE picture. Although the conductor is leading the orchestra the audience, the critics, etc. are only listening to what comes from the musicians instruments. In relation to the business aspect, a leader instills in his/her workers his/her way of thinking and encourages them to replicate that to their best ability. This is a system that works quite well because like the orchestra, the finished product isn't displayed by the conductor or the leader of the workforce, it is displayed by the workers and the members of the orchestra playing the instruments.

  1. Tremeris,
I know this book is right up your alley. The conductor and the orchestra analogies are easy to transfer to other professional areas, like business and education. I think you captured the true meaning of this weeks reading selection when you say, “…the finished product… is displayed by the workers”. I have experienced many performances at my school where I have been blown away by the band and orchestra’s performance. At the end of each performance I immediately congratulate the director/conductor for a job well done. The final production is a reflection of the leader’s true skills.

  2. You seemed to have a grasp on the chapter about being a leader. I was totally lost, your interpretation makes it make more sense to me now. As educators we need to focus on the big picture to make the entire class better. Administrators also need to focus on the big picture and work on the smaller pieces of the picture to ensure that the product produced is displayed by the staff appropriately.
